As long as they charge money for it, people will see it in stores and pay for it, thinking it must be better than the free stuff.
Of course, it's not.
People mindlessly follow the "you get what you pay for" saying, and wind up worse because of it.

If you want free bloatware, this is awesome. If you want a MUCH better AV/Security app, look for ESET NOD32 or Kaspersky.

I bought it (free after rebate) back in March. As slow as Vista is (even w/4GB DDR3), it definitely slowed Vista down even more. McAfee's interface is also a mess. I finally gave up on it when it actually missed a TR/Dldr.Zlob.Gen2 Trojan a few weeks ago. I downloaded Avir AntiVirus Personal (it's free and received excellent reviews)on my laptop and installed it to my desktop. It found and completely removed it. I uninstalled McAfee, and my startup time and performance have both improved considerably. Avir gives you a nag screen periodically to upgrade to the pro version, but there is an easy fix available with a Google search. The only worthwhile thing that the pro version adds is realtime incoming mail support. I'm looking for a workaround to that. I'm very impressed with Avir, and don't miss McAfee AT ALL.

I would think they would have problems giving it away for free

The free after rebate 3 user Norton product is a much better deal.

If you have cable or DSL oftentimes they have free security suites available for download as long as you are a customer.
