#2, normally these LEDs should have 50,000 to 100,000 hours of life, so they must be overdriving them to save 50 cents.
Normally they're 100mW LEDs, but with an unregulated design like this they tend to start out at a little over 30mA and drop down below 20mA as the battery voltage drops.
This means the burn time is relative, to what very dim output do you consider it time to terminate your timer? Generalizing, let's consider burn-time down to half light output or about 15mA average current, and consider a AA cell worth about 2600mAH.
2.6AH/(0.015A * 11 LEDS) = ~ 16 hours
However, because it starts at such high current per this type of LED, it will soon enough burn out the LEDs one at a time so you have longer runtime but less output. It already starts out fairly dim so it has pretty limited application. Best advice would be modify the circuit so it puts a low-ohm resistor in series with the battery pack which does reduce brightness even more, but saves the LEDs from burning out.
Overall, you're much better off getting a better lantern, cut too many corners and you end up with cheap junk rather than a good value. One that is regulated and takes at least 4 x AA or other alkaline/NiMH cells, or Li-Ion instead is a suggested starting point.
