why a compaq out of all computers? I'm told that they make 2nd rate computers.

Cos it's really inexpensive? Vista Home (non-OEM) itself is at least $75.

#1 I bought my Compaq Presario back in 2001 and I'm still using it today. It has an Athlon XP 1900+ w/1GB RAM and works just fine for web browsing, email, digital photos, ripping/burning media, etc.. It even plays back HD video (720p) just fine. I do fresh installs of Windows XP every year to keep it peppy, and run the typical security programs (AVG, ZoneAlarm, ThreatFire, Windows Defender).

I think part of the reason it's in fine running shape (original power supply and fans, too) is it's plugged into a good power line conditioner/ surge protector, and I clean the dust out of the CPU case every so often (helps keep cooling at max efficiency).

#3. I have 1 too but it's a 1700+. I do restores every 18 months or so and have limited accounts for the wife and kids. Back when I bought mine, the people that were bad-mouthing the brand were getting Celerons.
