I am glad that most amateurs gravitate towards Nikon and Canon. I have a K10D and at my photo club my photos beat the pants off the CanNik crowd.
For you smarties who can think for themselves ... the in-body IS makes a huge difference since you can use any lens ... including the venerable m42 screwmount lenses from 40 years ago. I moved from Canon to Pentax and have an envious collection of old glass that I bought from Pawn shops.

First things I want to know is what kind of photo club does he go to where they take their pants off. Go Canon or Nikon and you won't be sorry. I went from an Olympus E520 to a Canon 40D and their is no comparison. Even my brother's Canon XS is better than this with tons more accessories available. Plus, Canons hold their value and will allow you to sell it in the future when your ready for a new cam.

#3 I used to know someone who went from a Vivitar to an Olympus and was thrilled. We are talking Pentax ... not Olympus.
Also, my impressions (as stated in #1) is based on RAW mode ... Manual mode. If lack of know-how prevents one from shooting in that manner ... they can safely ignore my comments and go the other way.

A dslr that takes SDcards and AAs.. AND great image quality. What more can you ask for.
Oh.. And that you can use nearly any pentax mount lens available.

#3 FYI - the 40D and E520 are in different classes...their should be a difference in performance. Especially when there is a $500 difference in price.

When it comes down to it, many times it the photographer and not the camera that make the difference (so long as they are in the same category).
That being said, 10.2MP with a 18-55mm lens for $415 is a good deal. I just picked up my D60 for only $200 more including a 55-200mm lens.
I'm not a huge fan of AA's for batteries though. I've run into many situations where one goes bad and now you don't have enough to run the device. The LiIon's can be slightly more expensive, but then there's less to lose and no worries if part of the battery is bad.

#3 you should compare your 40D with Pentax K20, which won many rewards and is weather proof.
The D40/D60/D5000 viewfinder is a joke. I hate looking through a tunnel during framing. The cheap Canon DSLR like XTi etc take good pictures but they feel like a light plastic toy.
