How is this a 'new deal'? This has been $199.99 for... months now, at MicroCenter. The only people who buy it elsewhere are those who don't have a MicroCenter nearby.

Yes, #3, this is an old deal - but it is still the best price for the i7-920 you'll find anywhere. At this price point the "bang for the buck" factor can not be beat. I was an AMD fanboy for years, this deal alone has brought me back to Intel.

And #5, if you think the site is bad, try going to one of their stores.

I have one of these CPUs sitting on my desk right now - bought at Microcenter - waiting for my new motherboard and RAM to show up from Newegg.

How come this one has less L3 cache than the Q9550? How is its performance comparing with the Quads?

This is a great price for a great CPU. It was the one that converted my admittedly biased 15+ year AMD fanboyism. Moved from a A64 4000 to this. 7x faster! Built a PC with the MSI X58M uATX board and 6GB of ram. The whole thing (case, MB, ram, HD) was about $600 since the CPU was only $200.

BTW, make sure you get the D0 stepping or higher core. If they don't have it but there's a Fry's in the area, they WILL price match. They did for me.

#4 the i5's are meant to be a class lower than the i7s. Even though they do have 870s and higher clock rates, the i7s and even this i7-920 is a good entry point.

#7 Check out Anandtech's bench. Here's the link for the i7-920 to Q9550 comparison (http://www.anandtech.com/bench/default.aspx?p=47&p2=50&i=625.26.27.28.29.30.31.32.33.34.35.36.37.38.39.40.41.42.43.44.45.46.47.48.49.50). Overall the i7 is about 10-15% faster. Multimedia and raw number crunching is even higher - up to 30% faster (Povray, Winrar, par)

Also, consider this. The 920 has the potential to overclock to 4GHz. The stock is 2.6Ghz. Of course there's diminishing returns as you get faster but basically it could reach the speeds of the i7-975 with little effort.

Software development, running VirtualBox, media encoding, Povray and Apophysis (fractals). Gaming is casual but once Diablo III and Starcraft 2 come out, then it'll be gaming. It is definitely the fastest computer I've ever used. I can have three virtual machines running, encode a dvd and play warcraft III (DOTA FTW) and have no slow downs.

The D0 isn't but there's another keyword (i forget). If you mention that you want the D0 stepping, the guys at Microcenter should know. They'll get a slew of people asking for it. I currently have a mild overclock using MSI's tools. One day I'll get courageous and try to overclock it.
