Was my dream a few months ago, but not now. It's C-200 PCH.

I've had one for about 6 wks. Works very well. Bought it on line from the Western Digital Store as a refurb. for $75.
If you buy one and want to update the firmware, that firmware must be on the USB drive attached to the device before it will even display the menu option to update firmware.

Wait for the 2nd gen. It will have network capability.

I'll wait for the 2nd generation but I'll be very disappointed if it doesn't come with wifi. WD comes out with good products but they are always behind in specs.

Thankfully my HT setup is next to my cable modem and router, so I can just plug in. So I'd be OK if the 2nd Gen is ethernet.


#6 Assuming they do offer wifi, doesn't it seem likely it won't be 11n? Not sure how well 11g can handle HD streaming.

Western Digital WD TV-2 Leaked

Picking up from the success of its WD TV HD Media Player last year, a leaked WD TV-2 has come out but promises to be a lot better. The latest HD Media Player offering now features network playback over new Ethernet jacks, DTS audio decoding and a plug for people caught in between composite and HDMI.

It comes with a bundle of codec support which means that it can practically cater to most video formats we have today. No definite date of release or price has been reported but this should all be answered in a couple of months.

I have tons of new .mkv and .avi movies. PS3 can play them, #10?

I have had mine for about 4 months using a 1TB drive. I love it. The only thing I would like is being able to page down the list of movies instead of one at a time, but I'm sure a futer firmware update will fix this

Hey #2 - you go right ahead and spend the $299 for it while the rest of us can wait for the Version 2 of the WD HD TV.

#2 you're comparing WDTV to PCH which is a $300 to a $90 unit.


#4, #5 show you that IT IS network ready. Work fine with wire and wireless if you have the USB adapters that is supported.

#10 PS3 = 280 watt ; WDTV = 30-50 for movies this is a lot.
Also no WMV and MKV which are the most popular download movie formats so you gona need lot of time converting them. The WDTV only need converting audio from WMV which contain multi-audio chanel or pro and the convertion is as fast copy the file to and back (2 copies operation).
Then the trouble of carry the PS3 along instead of the ultra-compact WDTV even just from room to room. You'll see if you got both of them like I do.

#14 You raise lots of good points, but I disagree with two of them.

(1) I use mkv2vob...converted an 8GB mkv in, I dunno, less than 60 seconds I think.

(2) Carry the unit around? Admittedly, the WDTV is built to be portable. And if you have a thumb drive attached, then cool. But I'm willing to bet most of us would attach a 500GB or 1TB drive--with its own power supply--and that baby ain't going nowhere. My guess is that while 100% of the PS3's stay where they're put, around 90% of the WDTV's do the same. Not a really meaningful difference.

Regarding the PS3, nobody here mentioned streaming. In my case I watch most of my video on the PS3 (including Hulu) streamed by Tversity, which autodetects what the PS3 can play and transcodes whatever isn't native. Admittedly, I'm doing this with an 11n network and a quad-core PC serving the files, but they play exactly the same as if I copied them to the PS3 hard drive. In other words: perfectly.
