If you're a student (or not) with a working .edu email address and don't have a bias against using Microsoft products, then Windows 7 can be yours for $30. They're offering upgrade versions of both Home Premium and Professional for that price. In order to see Professional, you'll have to: Enter in your .edu email address, click the link in the confirmation email, and finally click on where it says "Need to join your school's network domain?".

I wonder if you could start up your own non-accredited university for purposes like these

I would think this requirement would prevent you from legally doing that #1.

Heads up, at least at my school, there was a share drive that any student could get on and DL various (most) MS products and install without hassle on anything.

Your biggest issue will be securing a .edu domain, which appears to be prerequisite to qualify.

I think there is a restriction on getting .edu and .gov domains. You can get .com, .net and .org without problem if the name is not already registered, but I've never seen .edu and .gov available.

Nice ... many of our students took advantage of the "Ultimate Steal Deal" on Office 2007 ULTIMATE (which appears to still be good) for $60. Processed and delivered the same way, although for $10 extra you got a backup CD in about two weeks. I suspect some will appreciate this Windows 7 offer, also! Great find, Ben!

I already applied. Waiting for the instruction email. $30 for an official release IS a good deal, like #9 mentioned about the Office Ultimate version for students a while ago.

Are there any cheap Windows 7 Upgrade deals still available for non-Educational users?

I don't know the details of this upgrade. I just got a netbook with Win XP on it. Can I:
1- upgrade (I know that it'll take a full re-install) from XP or does this only allow you to upgrade if you're running Vista
2- even do an upgrade with the stuff that Asus provides? I've got the CD key for Win XP, but it doesn't ship with retail style windows discs.
Anyone know?

Hmm... Sounds like a full version, not just an upgrade?
"Note: If you're not upgrading from Windows Vista Home Premium, you may need to perform a custom installation"
And then when you look at the help link, it says to select Custom Installation "if your computer does not have an operating system, or if you want to set up a multiboot system on your computer"

NOT Professional. It's Home Premium.
