Be afraid of Vista. Be...very...afraid.

Not sure, but I think with Vista you have to upgrade. You can't do a fresh install like XP. This may be a deal, but nto if it has to sit on top of a Vista install.

#6 you can do a clean install, you just have to provide valid installation media from a previous version of Windows

I did a deal like this with Windows XP to Windows Vista upgrade. It was a nightmare.
I had to fax in the proof of purchase 3 times. I spent hours on the phone. The company that was handling the upgrade kept loosing the items that I faxed and I didn't get the upgrade disc until Vista had been out for almost 6 months.
And I was the only person that had a problem. There were a couple of forums out with people discussing the upgrade process.

I'll never do one of these upgrade offers again.

Not so much a deal. The pre-order price for Home Premium was $49. The pro version was $99. So you get an old OS and a free upgrade to something that ran at $49?

Looks like a clever attempt at getting the rest of the dust-coated Vista boxes off the shelves. Truthfully, if I didn't use my wife's college email address to get the $30 deal, I'd get this. After all, $90 Vista -> Win7 is cheaper than the $200 Win7 retail price.

Will the Vista still work on a different machine? In other words. Have a Working computer with said operating system and do a Clean install then immediately upgrade. Will the other Vista box still be able to be used? 2 for 1 in other words.

@5 you don't really have to use Vista. I actually like Vista -- but not compared to Windows 7.

@6 Windows 7 does not have to sit on top of Vista. In fact, the installation process encourages a clean install.

@7 you can actually upgrade from a free copy of the last release candidate of window seven. LOL only the uninformed will end up buying a full copy. Not only that, the release candidate is Ultimate, so you can choose any upgrades you want to purchase.

@8 yeah my brother had this problem. Not only was there a lot of back-and-forth but he had to PAY like $20 for shipping and handling or some such nonsense. I would want to read the fine print first.

I got a $90 Windows 7 professional upgrade pre-order. I would rather have a full version and upgrade but what the heck. Oh yeah, this time around there is a difference between home premium and professional for the home user. Well, the power home user.

Don't forget that the student deal is for an Upgrade, not full Install, license of Win7.

When they get around to sending you your Windows 7 stuff it will be weeks or more after the launch date. Not worth it to save $9.

#15-Where does it say it's an upgrade? I need 2 copies and since my daughter has an edu email, this was going to be my 2nd copy.

I moved from Vista to Win7 using the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard. Start it up on your new clean Vista machine and it creates a USB dump you execute on your old machine to synch the computers together over the network. At some point it gives you a numeric code to type in and, about an hour later, your new win7 machine has all your old files and settings.

Of course it won't bring over your old software so you should install that stuff before running the wizard.

Just an option.

#11 you'll probably need to activate vista first before upgrading, and since its already activated on one machine you can't reuse it on a different one.

Why by Windows anything... when you can get UBUNTU for FREE! It is far superior to Windows Vista and Windows 7. Check it out at www.ubuntu.com.
