this follows the ink jet mantra. Loose the money on the hardware, make it all back and then some on the consumables.

#2 has it right. In fact, Brother makes it all the more obvious by having the printer spit out an additional, useless, blank 3/4" on both sides of the printing to use up the tape even faster.
It's a shame because, otherwise, it's a nice labelmaker.
