better to get the new Android phones (HTC Hero, Samsung Moment, Motorola Cliq). Palm's market share is way too small for a closed proprietary phone to be successful.

Where did you get the idea that it was closed and proprietary? It runs Linux, is quite hackable, and has a free open SDK available.

Typing this on my Pre and loving it. Had the iPhone 3G but being able to multitask is where it's going. The free homebrew apps at precentral.net are really good. Paid apps are hit or miss but the phone/WebOS has only been out a few months and it has plenty of time to mature into it's own niche.

Pre just removed all doubt for me when I installed My Tether. Instant WiFi router anywhere. So f'ing great.
I do wish it had Slacker on it instead of Pandora.

Who else makes a phone that runs Pre OS? It may be based on Linux, but it is a completely closed variant, just as Mac OSX is a closed variant of Unix. People can write apps for the iPhone too, but that doesn't make it an "open" platform. No one else can make a phone running the iPhone OS.
The iPhone was ahead of its time and able to grab a big share of the smartphone market. Pre was way too late to the game to make a significant dent. Android, being an open platform with the huge backing of Google, is the one OS that will be able to displace the iPhone in the foreseeable future.
This has nothing to do with Pre's technical merits. I've read many great things about it. The videos of it in action look impressive. But tech history is strewn with superior products that have fallen by the wayside because of poor timing and/or bad marketing.
BTW - just about every worthwhile app from iPhone (and Pre) have been or are already ported to Android. Tethering apps, Shazam, casual games such as Bejeweled, Doom, etc etc...
