1 year should be enough to cover your defecttive.

Why does WD only provide only a one-year warranty on their external drives and three-year warranty on their internal drives. Hint: because the external drives fail in 366 days.

#5 they are labeled the same as internal drives, made in the same factory by the same machines. They just understand that an external is going to generally have a hard life, being moved around more than an internal.

So if I generate some bogus sales receipt and take it out of the enclosure when it dies after 1 year, and I try to get warranty service, it should work?
