I was looking into building a HTPC but the price of the components like case is way too high - so I just bought ps3 and use it as a media center.

I do the same thing w/ our 2 ps3s. We've got a gigabit household network, and one machine acts as a media server. Bittorrent to get the shows, Tversity Pro to stream the shows (divx, h264, etc.), blu-ray rips (.m2ts h264+ac3 files), and music. Disabled any transcoding since the PS3 does a good job. PlayOn for hulu / netflix instant playet, etc. PS3s hooked up to HD AVR receivers via hdmi. Consequently, though tempted, I haven't built a HTPC using one of these cases. Still, this one looks nice.

Actually, the PS3 does play mkv files. You just need MKV2VOB. Works fine for me, tried it with two shows, works great.
