Compared to in-ear headphones, active noise canceling headphones suck. The plug of the in-ears reduces external sound much better, at least in planes.

i had a nice pair of those sony md5 or whatever noise cancellers. they were pretty good but, they always made that background buzz. iem are definitely the way to go, just make sure to get a good seal

interesting how these look a lot like the Bose noise canceling headphones, eh?

The bose ones work without the background hum but do not work at all with a dead battery. These look exactly like the bose ones. The sound on 'em is pretty good but I'm not sure if they are worth the cost as I got them for free.
