Compared to in-ear headphones, active noise canceling headphones suck. The plug of the in-ears reduces external sound much better, at least in planes.

i had a nice pair of those sony md5 or whatever noise cancellers. they were pretty good but, they always made that background buzz. iem are definitely the way to go, just make sure to get a good seal
