Even with the rebate this still seems rather pricey.

Because it is local store pick up, you have to pay the tax, and the tax is base on the price $1000. For CA, it is close to $900 even after rebate, not a good deal.

I agree with #3 and #5 - use the $800 (+tax on $1000) to buy yourself TWO nice PC notebooks.

#6, show me a pc laptop with 13.3", core 2 duo 2.26, decent video card, webcam, wireless n, decent battery life and DDR3 for sub $500 (because you said you could buy 2 for $1000)...

I don't care what OS you run, there is no such thing as a "nice" notebook for $450.
As for buying two, it doesn't matter how many turds are in the pile, it's all still shit.

I disagree with #3, #5, #6 and agree with #7, you are not gonna find a comparably spec'd pc for less then $500 out the door. I purchased a dell inspiron 15 for $500 after tax & shipping in july, and that was a Core 2 duo 2.1Ghz with 800fsb and worse graphics. Dell has not offered that system for that price since, so that was a decent deal and it does not even come close to the macbook specs.

I bought this for my wife last week. I'm strictly utilitarian and own several Windows workstations and notebooks for home and office. I've bought notebooks for $3k+ and notebooks for $400. This is a quality built notebook and worth every penny of the $900 we paid for it. If I were to look for a new Windows notebook with the same specs and quality of construction, I would expect to easy spend $800 and probably more.

#16, surely you haven't heard. The fact that you can purchase a heap of junk windows machine for $400 that doesn't have any comparable specs clearly demonstrates that Apple hardware is EXTREMELY, SEVERELY, GOUGE-YOU-IN-THE-EYES overpriced. Get with the program.

Are we supposed to be surprised that you can purchase an 8 pound boat anchor with a 90 minute battery life for the same price?
It costs money to go small. That's true no matter who puts their label on the case. Find a comparably equipped, similarly sized 13"-class laptop for significantly less money. I'll save you the trouble... you can't.
