This looks really nice, considering it's regularly $185. Can anyone explain why it's that expensive?

They make it that expensive so that when they have a sale, they can mark it down a considerable amount. Then suckers come along and say "Ooo, this must be a good deal. Look how much it usually costs! I had better buy 2."

Some people say I'm a bit cynical.

Cloudveil is a high-end manufacturer of outdoorwear, in particular winter sportswear. They charge a lot of money because other companies charge a lot of money for similar items (high-end market.) I owned a Cloudveil ski jacket for a few years and it seemed to be built just as well as other jackets I've owned from North Face, Marker, Patagonia and Mountain Hardware.

If you're looking for a high-quality, long-lasting midlayer to wear in the snow or outer layer to wear on chilly days, this may be a good call. An equivalent jacket from another brand at a store like I is going to be around $150-175:
