Apparently I was wrong and #2 actually bought "Magic Jill", which would explain why he doesn't understand how it works.

A lot of complaints have been made about this device but personally I believe that it all depends on your internet connection.

I have one of these, and when it works, it works well. However, it mysteriously disconnects by itself, at least several times a week. Sometimes it is during a phone call, other times I'll be working on my computer and the Magicjack all of the sudden just sort of reboots itself.
The company recommends that you reboot your modem once a month. If you don't, you can get some very annoying echoing in your phone during calls.
But when this thing is working properly, it works well. Calls are crisp and clear, and you can call anywhere in North America or Puerto Rico. But don't make your calls too long -- unless you warn your caller in advance that your phone may -- and very likely will -- disconnect in the middle of a call.

I am sure a simple USB device has a wide range of results but my son and I are happy with our Magic Jacks. Bandwidth is a big consideration. My son's goes in and out a little with DSL. Mine is absolutely great with my 10Mbps: none of the problems that my son and #5 have. Also, the Jack does stick out in an awkward way from a laptop, if you bush by it, it will reboot. So it is best in a back USB port of a desktop (that is always on).

you can never make and receive calls if your computer is off, calculate the yearly extra cost of your pc on 24x7, add another $25 or $30 per month to your cost. not worth it.

I would consider if I did a lot of international travel and carried a laptop.
Ooma is way better and you don't need to leave your computer on all day. $12/year and way better.

I've had it 4 months and run it with FiOS. I havent had any problems with phone calls or faxing from it. Its worth the $$ if you ask me.

No problems here and when calling Japan or Taiwan from the US, the calls are quite clear. I have cable and have not had any disconnects, but the longest I have stayed on a call is a little over an hour.
I have noticed calls to mobile phones in Asia having occasional issues such as not being able to hear me clearly, but other than that it is saving me money since I have it plugged into my file server which I leave running 24/7.
