These don't work with just any Mini-PCI-E slot. They only work with those that use non-standard PATA/SATA pin-outs to the Mini-PCI-E slot, typical of notebooks. This is being known more and more as the Mini-[S]ATA (m[S]ATA) slot.
There is no PCIe to [S]ATA bridge on-board. The pin-outs must come from [S]ATA channels on the mainboard itself.
