I don't believe this is doing onboard RAID, it only "allows" the host system to use RAID, which is obvious and a non-feature. Of course you can run RAID, it has little to do with the device itself, it only has to present the disks to the host computer.

Still not a bad deal. I've been looking for one of these to add to a small home server.

Onboard RAID would cost you 5 times as much (at least) and be bulkier and power hungry. Not what you want for home server.

I got this for $160 and a free 1tb drive I sold on ebay.

It will only recognize the first (bottom) drive while you have it connected to your esata port on a laptop.

Oh, but it does come with an esata pci card that allows me to see all of the drives when I put it in my desktop computer. Copying one 1tb drive to another takes about 5hrs, though.

TMOney - you need a eSATA port with port multiplying, hence only 1 drive being visible on your laptop. Transfer time is maybe a little slow, but if you are copying to/from drives in the same enclosure, that's understandable.
