From what I read, hyperthreading is no good. Many of the manufacturers have the BIOS default set to off. The corporate people also turn if off, because voiding the cache slows the computer down.
So the fact that there is no hyperthreading in the I5 is not a bad thing.

Yes, but when you overclock a $200 i7 920 from 2.6 to 4 Ghz, that hyperthreading is quite useful. There are no slow 4 Ghz threads.

get the i5, nice chip and took me literally 5 minutes to get 4.0ghz on air. This chip is very fast and gaming for some reason is smoother than my e8500 at 4.0 also.

Microcenter does mail orders too. However, if it were me, I'd wait until the prices settle down more. This is only a guess based on past experience, but I'd expect to see an i5/mobo combo from Frys for about $150 or less within 6 mos.

#12, I'm sure #2 meant i7 920, Microcenter has been having that WALK-IN ONLY special for months now. I'm sure it's a loss leader for them, they hope you pick up a new mobo, memory, case, power supply etc., that's the reason it's a walk-in special only.

Hyper threading can be bad because programs use cores in an order like this:

1) Core #1
2) Hyper Thread #1
3) Core #2
4) Hper Thread #2
etc etc

So if you end up with a program that uses say 2 cores, you'd wind up using core 1 and it's hyper thread instead of core 1 and core 2. Same thing for a program using 4 cores. Personally, I'd just turn hyper threading off ... or go with an i5. In the rare case that you have something that can use 6-8 threads, turn HT on.

#8 this is the time of year when everything goes up in price for the suckers that buy for the holidays. businesses make most of their revenue this time of year from these suckers.

Yes, Black Friday sales items are used as loss leaders to get you in the store. But if you do your research and only buy the sale items, you come out ahead of the game.

Yes, many retailers make most of their revenue this time of year, but that's due to volume, not higher prices. Toys R Us gets 40% of its yearly revenues between Black Friday and Christmas, and doesn't mark up any of their prices. Just the opposite. They mark down a lot of items, and leave the rest alone.

Black Friday sales ARE a time of the year a lot of us get deals that still aren't available a year later. I bought a bunch of stuff last year, including a 22" monitor for my in-laws for $99 which is great, and a loaded dual-core AMD system (also for someone else) for $230.

There are truly some great sales. Just do your research before you go shopping. If you happen to buy another item while you're in the store and find out later it was overpriced, just return it.
