I've owned the 37" version of this TV for over a year. The pict is nice. I was disappointed with the lack of digital audio input options, but if you use HDMI, it is fine.
I and others have noticed a hum, but I'm the only person in the house who hears it. Yes, we've calibrated with picture. A new firmware was installed about 4 months ago. That helped with the lockups... a little. About once a month, the TV produces a really loud tone, blanks the picture and doesn't stop until turned off.
The picture is nice. Even a TiVo s2 with 480x480 outputs looks good with svideo. Our DVD player with HDMI and 1080i upscaling is excellent on the 37", but that is subjective.

You can turn off the toshiba logo in the menus.
My only complaint is that it takes a long time to switch between inputs and that some times i get a green screen when changing the inputs.

General question for the community, does it seem crazy to make a major purchase this close to Black Friday / Cyber Monday?

I'd say there's no reason not to wait and see. Another Black Friday site says December is the time to buy higher end TV's.

Kudos to #5 for being so specific. If it has the same warranty who cares if it's refurbished?
