yeah, several other websites are also announcing this "Free" offer, but when I go to newegg, it shows as 39.99. Are we missing something?
Anyway, in my opinion, the AVG Free edition (available for download at their site) is all one needs anyway...

Good AV? After installing AVG Free 8, I found my system to be much slower. Don't recall 7.5 to have such a significant impact on the responsiveness. Maybe 9 is better.

Anything that isn't MSE is stupid. How do you beat free, fast, and thorough?

I used AVG up to a year or so ago, then I switched to Avast, I think it's better.

Not to beat a dead horse (or dead thread) but:
1) AVG 9.0 does run faster than 8 or 8.5, assuming you don't run into weird problems. There is a small minority who do. Also, the new caching process really needs an off switch for when you plug in large removable devices. Other than that, 9.0 is pretty good.
2) "I used AVG up to a year or so ago, then I switched to Avast, I think it's better." The one major failing of Avast at the moment is that is has NO heuristics based detection whatsoever. I'm sure the defs are great, but having no heuristics is a baconbreaker for me and many others.
