This is a pretty good unit. I saw it at American the other day. It is a great choice if you have a well lit room.

Does anyone know why the vertical resolution is only ever 768 for these things? Are there any tv's that have higher definition?

#11, resolution does not depend on screen size.
#10, alot of 42+ inch tv's do have 1920, but that is horiz. vertical is 1080
#6, when you say "I find that..." do you mean through observation you have found that... or do you mean you have compared the contrast ratio of the average Viewsonic LCD vs. the average of others? I would say 1000:1 is about average (when comparing actual numbers); weather that is Static or Dynamic...that is a different story.
Education Time:
As far as contrast ratio goes, you have to consider what measurement of contrast ratio they are using. There are two types:
Static Contrast Ratio: the ratio of the luminosity of the brightest pixel and the darkest pixel the system is capable of displaying simultaneously (in the same frame, at the exact same time).
Dynamic Contrast Ratio: the ratio of the luminosity of the brightest pixel and the darkest pixel the system is capable of displaying - not necessarily at the same time. The reason it would be different is because recent TV's are able to change the intensity of the back light depending on the average luminosity of the frame. To further clarify, if the scene is dark anyway, they can skimp on the back lighting and have darker blacks.
You thought is was just strait numbers, and then I make it complicated; yet, still, it doesn't stop at Static or Dynamic. The contrast ratio can be greatly be affected depending on the input signal strength (weather or not it contains the full range of brightnesses from 0 to 100% simultaneously, or an average). Also, how much room light can be reflected off the surface of the display, which, in turn, depends on the luminance of the display. You will almost never get what is posted by the manufacturer anyway because they are measured in a completely black room.

Viewsonic monitors are nice but my only complaint is how the backlight tends to show through. I have a nice 19" widescreen for my PC but the backlight is my only major gripe.
