It's all in the details of the agreement You can cancel, but 1 month (2?) before that date of expiration is when you must make that decision and let them know. If you still cancel after then but before your actual end date - too bad - enjoy the reaming...

You need to cancel any time up to 15 days before renewal, which is completely reasonable, otherwise the service renews.

This is a good, legitimate deal and service.

If anyone has an issue, hit it head on rather than just talking third party smack.

This is why you use virtual credit card numbers.
In 6 months the number is invalid and they have no authorization to charge you.

1&1 used the right way of offering FREE service.
You put in a phone number. And it called you back with a verification number. That was the best 3 year advertisment program ever. I recommend their Average quality service to many people who want cheap hosting.

What you're talking about with 1&1 was several years ago when they first launched marketing in the US and they don't do this anymore.

The credit card is used to secure your domain or kept on file to keep the service turned on after the first 6 months. If you're more concerned with being billed than having the service turned off, just follow the instructions in the link I posted - or if you're really anal use a virtual credit card number -- which I think is over the top.

The whole point of a promotion like this is for you to try the service, and like it - then renew.

oh boy So much for not crossing the line. You crossed it somewhere back in Hollywood.

GoDaddy just doubled the disk space and bandwith (data transfer limit) for their deluxe and premium shared hosting plans and they've recently reduced prices... I'd suggest checking them out.

I had Globat and never got my rebate from them...
When I cancelled they had to "VERIFY" my cancellation...what a bunch of BS that is...This isn't 3rd Party Smack, but I would never sign up with Globat again based off my experience.

GoDaddy is a good host, as well. Just bear in mind that their primary business is domain registration, they limit the number of mySQL databases and they don't provide toll-free support ... or a 6-month free offer.

They do have some really funny commercials, though

#17, don't be foolish. It's very common for industry people to browse popular internet forums now.

I belong to a mt. bike forum and we have employees from at least a dozen major manufacturers that regularly answer questions and discuss their products. It's good business sense - you can stop the nasty rumors before they get out of hand, and make sure that information about your products is accurate.

In Pre-Internet days you could connect with industry employees directly on Compuserve (and to some extent AOL, Prodigy, etc...). Because a lot of tech companies were still relatively small you could easily get in touch with the programmer of your software, rather than a script-reading kid in a foreign country or the useless search feature of some knowledge bases. The fourms were searchable and in my Grumpy-Old-Man opinion they contained more relevant information than the knowledge base of most companies today.

If company reps are thick-skinned and can take the abuse of a few people with borderline-personality disorder then I would welcome them here at Bens (not that I have much of a say in it). Instead of a lot of anonymous mindless noise we could give direct feedback to the places we spend our money.

Not that I have anything against humor, I would rather us use the freedom that Ben gives us to discuss products and services.
