Actually, arch support is the great lie of the podiatry industry.
The only reason someone might need arch support is if they were wearing shoes that kept their foot muscles inadequate (or a clear cut case of deformity at birth).
If you have "normal" feet, arch support only destroys your normal walking stride and foot muscularity. People evolved to walk barefoot, with NO ARCH SUPPORT AT ALL, it is only in recent years that people thought that their lack of normal musclar function requires something special when in fact that "something" was the cause all along.
However, there is a different reason why Chucks are sub-optimal for human-cultivated environments, it is that we like to make hard floors that our feet and legs have not had time to evolve to handle, so shoes need to have more padding than these if you would stand or walk significant amounts of time on these unnaturally hard surfaces.
Even with children that have flat feet, current consensus is they are far better off with a flexible shoe with NO arch support at all, if they must wear shoes at all. This exercies their feet muscles, so they recover from their problem instead of arch support which only makes feet weaker.
If on the other hand you were born with significant bone deformity, the arch in your shoes will not matter, you need the bones broken and reset.
... this coming from someone who had totally flat feet and was put through BS by doctors then finally said screw them and used common sense to FIX the problem. It is either one of two things. Either your bones are deformed and need reset, or most often, all you need is more exercise for your feet muscles. A podiatrist will never tell you this because their job depends on repeat business.
#5, thanks for the informative post. so If I didnt walk on unnaturally hard surfaces then I would not need shoes with good padding. you are right in that I should walk more. Sitting all day is not what our ancestors did.
they also did not live as long so it didnt matter if your feet lasted into your 50s or 60s. and once you reproduce, you are unimportant for genetics.
Theories about podiatry aside, these are crappy, uncomfortable shoes that are worth no more than $20.
I agree basic canvas w/rubber shoes shouldn't cost over $20, $30 tops compared to other branded shoes at $40 or more, but except on concrete surfaces I find my Chucks extremely comfortable.
You can get generic clone canvas shoes for about $20 at the discount shoe stores, maybe less.
There is no my size.
I like to save me money on some shoes. thanks ben
If you can see your ankles then it is not true Chuck Taylor.
chuck taylors look cool, and are great for sitting around, but are terrible for walking any distance in since they have no arch support.
