I didn't see any ghetto dog food...

Just out of curiousity I added 3 35lb bags of Nutro Max dog food (on sale for $24ea) and some filler to my cart. The total if I drive 5 miles to PetSmart would have been about $98 with tax. The total with discounts and shipping from petfooddirect was $140.

Yep, shipping blows the deal for me. With the savings, my order was $68.98 before shipping, $100.97 with shipping. Cost at my local store is about $90 including tax.

I usually hold out for their 20% or 22% off discounts. I noticed their shipping rates changed recently so I had to adjust my usual number of bags of CareFresh ordered to maximize my overall savings. I analyze the overall cost by dividing by the number of bags I'm ordering to determine my best deal per bag. My best deal used to be with 3 bags, but now it's 5. That means I have to shell out more cash on the order, but I shouldn't have to order as often. Their price on CareFresh is good and is better than I can find locally so I'm happy if I work things out so that the shipping is basically free.

how do you qualify for free shipping? "They carry over 50 brands of premium pet foods, with free shipping on hundreds of items." What items would that be?
