Based on the deals I've used H&R Block's software (TaxCut) some years (2008, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2002) and TurboTax the other years (2007, 2006, 2001, 2000, 1999). I think they're about equal, at least in terms of usability. I've never compared the tax amount one calculates versus the other in any one year.
H&R block have sent me their software disc for the last several years - with very aggressive pricing:
- For tax year 2008 they gave me Premium Federal + e-file for free (apparently a $34.95 value)
- For tax year 2009 they're offering me Deluxe Federal + e-file for $14.95.
