Wow, the Mongoose is back?!? I had one back in the day (the 80's) and it was THE dirt bike to have at the time! I don't recall any specific gearing for "speeds" but I can imagine it has evolved quite a bit since then...
Back in the old days a Mongoose was a midrange BMX with a smaller rugged steel frame.
These days it hasn't evolved, now they're just another low end bike albeit one with more standardized and brand name replacement parts options than the even lower end junk Walmart sells.
If it were a hard tail and you didn't plan on riding offroad it might be marginally tolerable for the price and potential for replacing eventual failed parts with better ones, but always avoid cheap rear suspension bikes.
