the jumper cables that comes in these kits are the most basic and if you use them to try to start anything more then a tiny car they might melt and catch on fire.
Yeah, you'll want to leave the two batteries connected for a few minutes to get enough charge into the dead one that it's pulling fewer amps across the cable and you might want the first try to be starting right after disconnecting the cable. On the other hand cars these days do use smaller engines than they used to but I'd expect older cars to be more likely to need a jump.
