Is it faster to have two 1GB chips instead of a single 2GB one? Or does it make a difference?

Considering you typically have to use DDR2 SO-DIMMs in pairs, either for performance or even just operation, you want to buy in pairs.

Most modern motheboards use dual-channel memory controllers, which can access two separate banks of memory simultaneously. But in order for this to work, you have to install two separate banks of memory modules. In some computers, the two banks must be identical (same size, speed, etc.) but other computers can accept unequal banks (although all memory will run at the speed of the slowest bank).
