it's better to spend more and buy a zojirushi rice cooker for the real quality rice. they are pricy but worth every penny if you eat rice frequently. also, mine is made in japan. =)

common sense should tell you that the only rice cooker you really need is already in your kitchen. it's called a pot.

I have a panasonic i paid $120 very nice all computerized, i also have a 10 cup zorjirushi i paid $20 worth $140 at khols with coupon stacking. The unit shown is a piece of shit you will have to unplug the cable everytime you turn off the rice cooker.

What is a cup? I'd always thought 8 ounces. Then 2 of those made a pint, 2 of those made a quart, 2 of those made a half gallon. But then a cup of coffee became 6 ounces, then 5. Maybe less now. And a "cup" of rice in these rice cookers isn't 8 ounces, either. It's about 200ml or 1/5 of a liter, a bit under 7 ounces. So "10 cups" is really about 8.7 real ones.

The "best" rice cookers fulfill multiple duties. They don't just cook rice. Sealed single pot units such as this one or Zojirushis can make porridge, while two pot units such as Tatung or Tiger double as steamers (since all they consist of is a water-tight pot with a heater coil in the bottom, and the rice is cooked in an inner bowl).

It all depends on what you want to do. I swear by my Tatung, since I can already make porridge in a regular pot. $30 bucks will last you 30 years.

I bought a rice cooker for around $19 and it's been working for almost 10 years and makes excellent rice. Paying over $100 on a rice cooker? Please!

#6, if you can't cook something as simple as rice without the help of a computerized electronic device, you are hopeless in the kitchen and will have to subsist on mom's cooking for life.

it's not a matter of being able to cook rice in a pot or not, it's the will to.

seeing as how many people make rice at least once a day, rice cookers make things much easier and automated than manually cooking with a pot.

#8, surely you don't resist some using a surrogate mom (computerized rice cooker) instead of depending on the real one for life to keep from starving to death (or eating out--horrors!). What does it matter? I say whatever gets the job done efficiently, get it. Unless you love cooking, the less time in the kitchen, the better. But...beware the electromagnetic pulse.

White rice:
2 cups water, 1 cup rice, boil water, add rice, simmer covered for 20-25 minutes

Brown rice:
2 1/2 cups water, 1 cup rice, boil water, add rice, simmer covered for 40-45 minutes

For the really lazy and stupid you can get 90 second microwave rice in a bag

Using a rice cooker is no easier; you still have to cook and clean...

lol bunch of n00bs suggesting manual cooking. with a rice cooker, u use significantly less water to cook rice and there are so many things u can do with it like setting a timer so your rice will be nicely cooked by the time u come back from work.

Yes, common sense and the scientific community are in agreement that the EMF field generated by rice cookers is so strong that it will cook your neighbor's car, not to mention what it will do to their cat, small children, pregnant or nursing women, and pacemakers. I strongly advise that you cook your rice in a hand wrought bronze or iron pot over an open fire, using either yak or water buffalo dung, peat moss, or hard anthracite as fuel. More modern sources of heat will corrupt your soul. This was good enough for Confucius. It should be good enough for you.
