Firestone does charge more than average for their service, as proven by my experience. I changed the two front brake pads two and a half years ago at sears, costing me nearly $600. It included a pair of pads, a pair of rotors and change of some brake pump oil. They did have 24 month warranty on the work, but pads lasted just a few months over 24 months, but less than 20K miles. I had the pads changed at a local garage, costing only $140. For a work of changing the timing belt and water pump, the local garage charged $430, while firestone quoted $600. They do charge more.

Twice, once for myself, and once for my brother-in-law, Firestone forgot to tighten the lug nuts on a wheel after a service. I only drove 3-4 blocks to house and noticed when I pulled in. He got on the highway and lost his wheel causing much damage to his car.

    Stay away from Firestone.

Even if you have to rent a garage for half a day, DIY!

If the shop quoted only $140, either you didn't really need new rotors, OR they didn't know you did yet and would have informed you later of the higher cost to replace them, OR that it might cost about $7-15 each to turn them smooth again. Even so, I agree a local garage, especially a struggling one, may do much cheaper repairs - but not all will, especially if it is a repair where most of the work is labor intensive, where they expect they actually have to put in 10 hours to replace your $100 body panel versus billing you 2 hours to spend 5 minutes replacing your $500 ECM. The latter is much more profitable because they have a limited # of bays.

    Brake pads - $30
Brake no-squeal rubber goo stuff $1
    Brake Fluid - $3
    -=

    $34

There is another reason to DIY though, so you don't have to worry about them over torquing the lug nuts so much that you're bending tire irons or snapping lugs off trying to get them loose. At least in my experience, having them over torqued is far more common than under torqued.

Firestone is like any other service provider, be it a mechanic, lawyer, doctor or hair stylist. If you are lucky enough to find one of these that know what they are doing and provide good service, hold on to them for life. Otherwise the greed and incompetence of crappy people and companies will hound you for life.

I use the local Firestone dealer here in Oregon because I discovered years ago that if you get a Firestone credit card (no annual fee) they only charge $17 for an oil change. With 3 cars in the household and an oil change every 6 months, that's real savings.

But be prepared to emphatically say "no" to any other recommended services. They make their profit doing $75 "power steering flushes" and the like.

If you're a wimp and easily intimidated, go somewhere else. Otherwise, they are great.

Sent my daughter there on this coupon. They found 2 fluid leaks and a worn tie rod and quoted us almost $1000. Haha. No thanks. Oil change and rotation please!
