I have the SR80's. Yes these are great 'cans' as they say in the biz. True reference headphones. No frills, but comfortable, sturdy, and they sound great to my ears. Pretty good price too.

These are great as long as you don't mind others listening along with you. I do have a pair, but unfortunately, rarely use them only because most situations I find myself in, I need a bit more privacy.

Anyone have any suggestions for a similar price range & sound quality, but closed cans?

I'm a heavy research-b4-purchase peep and I've bought 2 pairs of Senns from there based on their reviews. Headroom's info just rocks
Back to this deal though - good price on exceptional phones

I brought my first pair of SR60 in year 1995 for $69. It is still the same price after all those years!

I agree pretty completely with #5 in this area of taste (to me closed vs. open is a taste issue, and not an absolute as some headphone sites portray), and jumped on the recent 20% off PayPal deal to get a pair of Sennheiser HD-280 Pros (as seen here) for $65 - 20%. I love mine. Maybe it's just the thrill of the new, but I think I like 'em a little more than my old Sony MDR-V600's and Senn HD-497's. If you're not willing to wait for the 280's to get back to $65, the Sony's are well-liked by many. But for that matter, folks who have the Sony MDR-V6 are fanatical about them, and both Sony's are in this price range. All three can be found for good prices on a popular mega sales site named after a brazilian river.

You will not get similar sound quality at same price from closed cans, period.
That's why they are open, they didn't feel it was a cool thing to let noise escape if it were easily avoided without a lot of expense added.
These are good cans, for the price, mostly for rock music. They are a bit more aggressive than some, rather than neutral or smooth. They also demand more current than many audiophile cans because of the low impedance.
Their earcups can be fatiguing, even painful if used for extended periods... but for their intended purpose, they're a good enough value you take the bad with the good.
The Sony cans are not as good, Sony doesn't have much to offer once you step into audiophile land. Check out http://www.head-fi.com for more than you ever wanted to know about headphones, but beware they will soon convince you that you MUST have a headamp to appreciate anything, then a DAC, then another headamp and another DAC and better sources and etc., $$ gone.
If rock music isn't your primary use, many people consider Sennheiser HD555 the best value in entry level audiophile cans. They're also very comfortable unlike SR60 but double the price, yet still cheap compared to many HQ cans.
IMO, if this is for home use and you want them for a computer as so often the context, these are not the right cans for that. These are good for rock music from a high current source, not mixed music from a low current sound card. They are not what you'd want to wear while gaming for several hours either and their soundstage is less than you'd want when settling for 2 channels. That's part of why better high end headphones don't use 32 ohm impedance, because there's not enough cross-channel separation unless you have a very low impedance ground channel instead of a common system grou...
