I've had an OPPO upconvet player for a year and boy is it great! However, Toshiba's HD-DVD players have fallen in price and they also upconvert as well. I too have seen too many Philips refurbs in every regard but for $30 you won't be out too much.

This one sells for $40 new, so I wouldn't buy the refurb.
Additionally, the USB version sells for not much more (~$70 or $60 on a good sale) and I feel it is definitely worth $30 extra.
I am just waiting for the one with the ATSC Tuner, and HDD for recording to drop in price.
