In some way Vostro series are better becasue they don't have a lot of junk software installed.

I agree #3, you'd need the system outlined by #1 just run all the crapware Dell puts on their Inspiron models along with your regular apps.

I got one of these with 8600GT, SXGA+ and 2 yr warranty... it is totally worth it. Really solid machine. May wanna put XP pro on it tho...

The Vostro line typically comes with an XP option... unless you get the 1700 series. I think those only have Vista.
