So how much information on your tax return do they sell?

None - been using them for years. I pay to file the state taxes though - that's where they make their money on this deal.

Still, they are the best I have used.

I agree with #2, I used taxact last year, it was very easy and best of all... free.

I have been using taxact for a few years now. It started out being a good program to use but lately I've started having issues with it. I don't know if my taxes have become more complicated recently or if the help in taxact has gotten less useful. Either way, last year I used it and it didn't seem to be as clear and easy to follow as before. This year I went with the $20 TaxCut deal that was posted not to long ago. We'll see how that goes.

I have to lean toward #1 - I don't trust the net. (well, i don't trust some of you 'special' people roaming the net). How many companies have botched their secure servers and let out all types of sensitive info. I consider myself a nerd, but I like the paper filing method, until Uncle Sam puts up his own server farm and locks it down tight, I'm going to stick with paper...

It's understandable though. Seems everyone is after our data, and nobody wants to pay for it...

The free version does not allow you to import your details from last year (the "Federal" paid version that costs $12 does this), nor does it do state returns ("Federal and State" paid version runs about $20 and includes one State return). My one gripe is that they charge you to e-file State, but I file by mail and that does not cost extra.

Verdict: If your tax situation is simple, this is a great product. I have used (paid versions of) this for the past four years, and highly recommend them.

are they selling your data- my advice get an accountant... considering you can write off the cost on your taxes and they find things you would not think of

Additional: I have always used the download version. I have an aversion to posting my financials online.

#5 - if you think the government will provide us with something that is "locked down tight" you're dreaming. That will NEVER happen.

The tightest lock you'll ever get on the network will be from a private company that has to fight for every dollar it makes on a daily basis, not from a government agency that has a guaranteed long-term meal ticket whether it shows up for work or not.

Re: TaxAct - I've also used them for the past two years and have had no problems.

If anyone is worried about their network identity or information, they need to signup for a service such as LifeLock.

Otherwise, don't sweat it. You should be worrying about dying in an automobile accident - NHTSA figures for 2006 are 120 dead every DAY in the US in traffic fatalities.

doesnt taxcut give a MIR everywhere if u go buy it at staples or something...and it imports from last year so thats waht ive been doing...dont think ive even heard of this one

been using them for years also.. prob not suitable for people with complicated income tax, but if your income is simple enough, then this is good
