Can you tell these are refurbished units? Do they have a "refurbished" label on them or anything?

@BubbRubb:
Unless you include local pickup.
On a side note, I took the plunge on one of these. Hopefully it's up to the task.

Works perfect!
I have an external 320GB. Bought the case and HDD seperate on newegg.
I used Swissknife to format the 320GB to fat32.

I just ordered one as well.
The upper part of the page states the device is out of stock but near the bottom and near the add to cart button, there is a statement saying it is "in stock"
hummm I wonder if their products work the same way?

If you want a superior upconvertor, you're probably better off getting Toshiba HD-DVD player which is as cheap as $85. Get the Philips if you want to use USB connection a lot.

We own this particular model (5982) for $60 on the last Black Friday 2007 sale. The remote is a little small, and it's slow as hell to recognize files and DVDs, but it works fine for the purpose and price. Has problems recognizing with our 2 GB Sandisk USB keys (with U3 software), but works OK with an old Lexar 512 MB.

My Philips upconverting player randomly drops video-out over the HDMI connection ... had to switch to component to get picture to stay on reliably. Kinda defeated the purpose (till I got an Oppo).

#16 My point is very simple: Toshiba HD-DVD player is a bargain if you're looking for an upconverter that's better than oppo. Those 5 free HD-DVD aren't the ones most people want anyway. But you can't find a better upconverter at the price you'll find at HD-DVD player blowout. It's a dead format, so what if it's not available for rental? Bestbuy is not switching to Blu-ray only yet. With all these buy 1 get 1 free sales, there is no point to get Blu-Ray version of the same title at 2-3 times the price. When bestbuy has the buy 1 get 1 free sale, the price is about the same as standard DVD.
Just read above. Philips player occasionally drops video out on up conversion. Sure it's half the price, but you get what you paid for.

#17, which Toshiba model is the best upconverter? Also, where can you get it for $85?
