I've heard a lot about northface, patagonia, and these other brands. Now, is it just a fad or do they really work? I'd like to find a slim jacket that helps with wind, rain, and cold, any recommendations? The featured jacket above looks pretty sweet, I just don't want anything bulky.

It is a very popular brand in the new york area. I was skeptical myself before i bought my first jacket. I bought a 2 in 1 jacket: an outer shell with a down insulator. Best jacket i've had yet. The outer shell does protect you from wind and the insulation layer keeps you warm. It is not water proof. However, it has kept me dry for 3 years now. water has started to soak in now b/c of wear and tear. Last i've heard, JanSport bought North face out, so the quality might have dropped some.

There are alot of different North Face jackets though, which one does what? That's alot of money for a jacket!
