Can't find QAM support... Anyone know better? I thought it did.

Does anybody know whether this can be used as a DVR without the TiVo subscription service (manually scheduling recordings)?

#2, all tivos can be used w/out the subscription, but the interface is very lame (VCR type scheduling), and you get constant reminders that your tv guide updates have run out and you should reconnect to the tivo service.

Also, the $199 price is valid only if you buy a service plan.

That said, I love my Tivo, and wouldn't trade it for the world, eventhough two of them are costing me ~$21/month

why pay for tivo when panasonic replaytv is free.

Tiny hard drive on this thing.. looks like maybe 250Gb? You may want funnel your savings (and then some) into an upgraded drive or add an expansion drive if you jump on this offer. A few options:

QAM - no, this device uses cablecard to get digital channels.

Tivos made after a certain date (sometime in 2003 I think) cannot be used without a subscription in any way (unless you hack them) Not even in "VCR mode"

Yes, you can copy files off your Tivo. There are both Tivo and third party apps to do this. Easy, works great.

3 years of Tivo is $300, so 8 something a month for the service. If you are renting a cable box, I bet you are paying close to that in rent that you won;t need to after you hook up Tivo. Just need to rent a $2 cable card.
Hard drive is 250G. There is a eSATA port that can be used to add an additional 500GB of space. Also, it is pretty easy to replace the internal drive with a 1G and the external drive can also be a 1G for 2G total. There are some people that have added larger arrays to the eSATA port - so long as it presents as a single volume over the single eSATA connection. I've seen a 3T screenshot. Supported by Tivo though you have up to a 250G internal and a 500G external and the external has to be the one Western Digital makes for Tivo (about $20 premium)

#1, It does have QAM support. Sort of. You can view QAM channels but you won't have Channel Guide Information for the QAM channels. You really need to rent a CableCard from your cable company in order to record HD content with this. You can use 1 multi-stream cable card or 2 single-stream cards.

I've upgraded harddrives on two TivoHD's. First time I set aside a full day "just in case" to do it. Took me 30 minutes to do with no issues. Second time took me 20 minutes. Upgrading harddrives in these units is cake.

I love the imaginative ways cable and telephone companies screw you. $2/month card rental. Warranty extra?

I know Comcast is not popular around here ( around anywhere ) but I really like their HD DVR, lots of disk, 2 tuners and a very usable interface. I think it's $10/mo rental, which makes it cheaper than Tivo!
