Only defunct when it breaks. Still upconverts, and plays all those HD-DVDs purchased prior to bailing out.

Using one of the HD-DVD players as an upconverting drive is just swell if you don't mind the 30-60 second boot time of a player compared with the instant on of most stand alone upconverting players.

Except the Sigourney Weaver version sucks. The British version is so much better.

Sunrise series on weekday mornings on Animal Planet. My cat searches the entire room looking for the birds that are chirping out of the speakers. She tries to get into the TV from behind, sure there's a snack in there somewhere.

#6, you don't know what you're talking about! Clearly the German import with Hans Gruber (of Die Hard fame narrating) is the best version with the best transfer.

Blu-ray owners will have to pay $80 just for Planet Earth alone. Sux to be them.

Planet Earth alone is $29.99 minus $5 coupon (ripped from SD):
Discovery store has the Planet Earth HD DVD Set on sale for $25 ($30 - $5 Coupon) with free shipping.
Next lowest on pricegrabber is $60.

This is a good deal for those who want to buy only Planet Earth Series.

    Coupons for the Discovery store:
    $5 off $25: EMAIL07 or EML2008

Italy+Australia+China+Brazil box-set sold out (was $25 w/coupon, thx #10), but did get singles for $9.95 each delivered free w/Planet Earth.
So that's "300" and 1 other in the Toshiba box I bought Leap-day for $88, 5 more free movies by mail, Bourne Trilogy $30 delivered from Amazon, nice library of HD.

is it honestly worth waiting for the BBC version to drop in price? it is currently over double what you can buy discovery channel version for. Is the video quality different? Thanks

It's more the commentary that's better quality. Sir Richard Attenborough who directed the Jurassic Park movies (hence his expertise) is far superior to that dude from the Alien movies.
