wow...10% every six months. dang! i must be paying a ton compared to what i started out paying...oh, wait, no i'm not. actually, they have increased prices once since i've had Dish. that's in four years. all tv services suck, not just Dish.

I've had Dish nearly 8 years. I think the price has gone up twice, maybe? And over 8 years the total increase has been less than 20%, and they added in more channels. Admittedly most of the new channels are garbage, but Dish isn't making the content, just delivering it.

@ hillsolo
They both have their pros and cons. I am a Dish customer, which has less HD channels, but apparently has a better DVR (just based on reading...)
Personally I only really watch the HD channels, and Dish has a great DishHD package that is $30/mo (excluding fees) and has all of the non-premium HD channels available on Dish.
I do not know how the HD channels that are Direct TV exclusive (USA, Sci-Fi, FX, and some more...) are, but I would suspect that a majority of the programming is just strech-a-vision anyways. I would love to hear whether or not this is true though.
You could also go to sites like CNET.com where they have some comparison of the 2 services (but it might be outdated...)
just my 2 cents...

I have not experience with Dish Network.
I have Directv. They have been the biggest PITA I ever had in my life. Never go for directv. Ask those who already tangled in their loop. They give you many irresistible offers to get you hooked and to get you signed for the contract. You won't see all the offers. My experience is you will get 50% of the initial offer. In my case they replaced my HD-DVR after the first year as the unit had gone bad, and they "automatically" renewed my contract for another two years. In order to have your in their contract all they have to do is to replace their DVR before the contract is over. I am taking them to the state attorney's office to get justice.

Just call DirecTV and threaten to leave to Dish Network. They gave me their HD-DVR (which is the reason I wanted to leave because DirecTV wanted a $299.00 lease) plus they gave me 6 months of HBO and Showtime. Sometimes it's worth 45 minutes of bitching to get what you want
They also gave me that DirecTV magazine, but after the free year of it, they started charging me.... so i called and complained and got 3 more months of Showtime.
Suckers

We went from "free" cable to Direct TV after the cable guy asked if we would like to pay for the cable.
Last I heard, you had to have two dishes to get local channels on Dish Network and our Direct service has been trouble free with the exception of maybe half an hour a year during a bad storm.
There is a lot of channel crap that Direct TV counts as something watchable. The best thing that they could give us is a set top box with auto volume control so the ass-hole local stations don't play the commercial twice as loud. And some of the Direct channels are really loud compared to other channels, keep the remote control handy.
