I'd recommend a purely mechanical version. Mine chewed through batteries fairly quickly for some reason, and is now somewhat useless. The markings on the device aren't much good, so you need the digial readout. If you use a caliper every day, you'll probably want a muich better one. If you just use one occasionally you can expect murphy's law to kick in with dead batteries. Spend twice as much for a low end mechanical version, or 2 bucks for a plastic thing that be about as good as this is without the batteries.
^ what type of batteries does it use and can't you just replace them? If it's the little alkaline button cells you can get those for about 5 cents each in bulk on ebay/etc.
