Don't let the Tivo zombies get you to believe this is better than your Cable Co's DVR.

The Weaknees upgrade instructions are fantastic. I set aside a full weekend to perform said upgrade and was done in 20 minutes, including disassemble/reassemble. Cake!

What sort of hoops do you have to go through to get this thing "activated"?
I only have basic cable but get about 6-8 HD channels via QAM tuner - will this tune and record those???

It records OTA out of the box. I have mine hooked up to antenna and Comcast (via multi-channel cable card).

Actually #2, my Cable HD DVR sucks compared to basic TiVO. g, my Cable HD DVR gives me 2 options for recording a series: 'First run' or 'All' -- no TiVO-like option 'Record if I haven't recorded it before' which also implies 'Don't record if I already have it'. My Cable HD DVR will gladly just keep recording the same episode over and over if I select 'All'. Pretty stupid.

I got this, works great, I love it - I might even be a zombie. In any case, if you want to get those last 4 hours (and then some) of the marathon in HD, just plug in an eSata drive.

#2, you cable stooge, STFU. You wouldn't know a premium user experience if it bit you on your fat lard ass.
Cable boxes just SUCK compared to TiVos, even when they are working right, which is close to never.
#5, the box will tune off-air and basic cable ANALOG signals without additional stuff. To tune digital channels or QAM channels or premiums, you need to get one or two cable cards from your cable company. Two cards will give you full dual tuner capability (ie. you can record two shows simultaneously, while at the same time watching a show you've already recorded).
I have the S3 version of this (two, actually), with external 1 gig drives, and they just ROCK.

What does the Tivo subscription get you? Is this usable as a DVR w/o the subscription by manually programming it?
