These radios don't come with rechargable batteries, not a very good deal.

Batteries not a big deal, buy a pack. Bigger hassle is omission of a recharge cradle, but then if you're not using them every day it might not matter so much.

I have never bought a radio like this before and have to ask, how good is the reception on these? I know it states 16 miles, but with any electronic device that has some sort of rating that isn't regulated (what comes to mind is the wattage on surround sound receivers) I usually cut that "spec" in half. So on that theory, would it be reasonable to expect a 9 mile range w/ these? If so, I find that pretty impressive for a $30 device. I always thought these would be fun to have a on a long road trip w/ friends. Any thoughts on that?

Yes, you might as well blame this pair of walkie-talkies as anything.

No way we can tell you this, depends on terrain and weather and ambient RF noise, etc. Usually when they give a range they mean on a perfect day if each were on top of adjacent mountains.
On a long road trip, if you mean you're talking from one car to another on the road, yes these would cover that range if you are just a few hundred yards away, except being in a metal vehicle is a problem, ideally you'd get something with vehicle mounted external antenna (CB).

Tried a set like this at Busch Gardens, not very good for keeping track of your kids. Of course, they could have just switched them off, heh.
