Sweet, this sounds like my kind of store. You welfare cases can stick to buying shoddy merchandise from Wal-Mart. REI is the Apple of outdoor equipment retailers. *smirk*

They don't carry any cheap crap and they have an unbeatable guarantee on EVERYTHING they sell. "Every item you purchase at REI is 100% satisfaction guaranteed."

    http://www.rei.com/returns

I saw a lady return a child's saucer sled that had been discontinued a 2-3 years earlier. Was still in original box and hadn't been used. Guy behind the counter asked her if there was anything wrong with it and she said "No, we just never used it." Not even a blink. Just gave her a full credit back on her credit card.

There is no substitute for good products and great service.

Is it really good service to make you pay for the foolish behavior of others?

One benefit at REI is not having to stand in line with, or even look at fat, smelly welfare recipients.

#1, of what products do you speak? I find that they have the cheapest prices of any retailer that doesn't exist solely online, and their member benefits ($20 for a lifetime membership) are some of the best I've ever encountered. The whole annual dividend/refund thing pays for the membership alone if you ever end up spending over $200 there.

REI is one of the best outdoor store chains in existence. Their co-op structure is excellently managed, and they have ranked in FORTUNE mag's "100 Best Companies to Work For" for something like the past 10 years.

Also, as #7 pointed out, they carry only quality equipment, and REI brand gear usually has more features and is less-expensive than mainstream brand gear (North Face, Arcteryx, Patagonia, Kelty, etc.) which seems to be unique for large retailers these days.
