I bit on this deal about two weeks ago- you can sign up for the SonyStyle credit card and get $100 off a $300 order, so I added some clearance speakers.
The unit has some bad reviews but with the updated firmware it has only received good reviews. The latest upgrade includes HDMI 1.3 and about every other feature except Dolby's TrueHD(because TrueHD which is based on a hardware codec).

I would NEVER spend that kind of money on a NEW unit, let alone a REFURB.
I'm happy with my HD-DVD A30... watched Star Wars (A new Hope) upscaled on it last night - awsome.
Tonight will be HD-DVD Transformers... sorry Sony.
