This products multiple times the light of those $6 flashlights and is built better, more like something you might want to have with you when you really need light, instead of a toy you leave next to the breaker box.
Might still be a bit expensive considering the China connection, http://www.dealextreme.com and http://www.kaidomain.com both have a lot of good deals on midrange Cree XR-E based lights. A few of them are compared here,

Personally I wouldn't bother with a 2 x CR123A light design because it's too large to reasonably fit in your pocket and more expensive and inconvenient to replace the batteries later. You could buy a charger & rechargable 123 cells but then your cost almost doubled. 2 or 3 C cell fliashlights are a nice alternative, above linked candlepowerforums have a few giant threads about a few of those you might be able to get locally.
