I don't blame petroleum companies, I blame the ignorant US populous who has pissed away the last 30 years of our planet with "popular environmentalism."
Hell, because Reagan brought fuel prices down, people didn't care until prices hard workerup. Even the Clinton administration was the era of big, gas guzzling cars in the US (not that he was at fault for it, but he didn't enact any legislation to promote otherwise). The first, "real" (and still very "entry-level") law we've had as the Energy Act of 2005, a nice start, but still a long way to go.
Solar power is not sustainable for mass energy generation, and unless Einstein was wrong, it never will be. It's a point thermal and minimal electric option, for select applications -- about 10-15% of our usage maximum (typically buildings).
Hydro-electric destroys ecosystems, so it continues to be a non-option since the '70s (except in China, where they don't give a flying f' about such things, as well as lives).
Wind is very ideal, but too many ass-wipes call it an eye-sore and stop it.
Nuclear power is safe (only the UK and select other countries, not the US, have ever operated Chernobyl-like designs, let alone do not have procedural/regulatory issues like the Ukraine did), has produced only 0.1% of the nuclear waste (99.9% came from weapons production), and we need to move away from our 50 year-old designs and join the French in the 21st century.
And we need to stop preventing the building of newer, cleaner foss... [Truncated]

Regan artificially brought fuel prices down by increasing their tax subsidies, which we the taxpayers account for. Our domestic petrol use has long since outweighed our production. Regan successfully waged a geo-political deadlock from the other oil rich nation (Russia) and pitted them as a competitor to middle east producers, allowing us to purchase oil at favorable rates. So while we didnt have the production capabilities, we entered the oil arena as the middle man by basing oil futures against the US dollar.
And while we are bitching about paying $3.45 at the pump, we are too short sighted to realize the UK is paying $8.38, France $8.07 and Germany $7.86. The truth is that we are ranked 111 in terms of the most expensive places to buy gas and rank 45 in terms of places with the cheapest gas (Venezuela is 12 cents/gallon). http://money.cnn.com/2008/05/01/news/international/usgas_price/index.htm?cnn=yes
The truth is President Kennedy saw our energy crisis and was assassinated before he was able to completed his vision of converting our energy platform from fossil fuel to water power. See: www.quoddydam.com We had sports cars from the 50’s that were capable of running on vegetable oil!
It is unfair to the American people to blame the oil companies greed on the ignorance of the masses. We have elected officials to take care of this shit for us. The problem is, special interest groups hijacked our system of government, much like the Church of Scientology infiltrated the IRS. This explains why the Bush administration created their energy policy in secret, why George HW Bush deregulated energy to create companies like Enron, why HW & W Bush have such strong ties ...
