not a deal. this seems to be the everyday price you find these at.

just bought one last week and came with the damn SD04 firmware and yep, sure enough...DOA...just like the reviews had mentioned. the clicking was ridiculous and with that being said, i wasn't about to throw out ~700 GB of data so i specifically requested the SD15 firmware and am currently waiting for that replacement.

i agreed with #1...not a deal at all...just an everyday price.

I just bought 2 of them from newegg last week. One had the sd04 bug and the other didn't. What a pain. Mainly since they are going in a headless server so now I have to find a monitor to hook up to it just to update the firmware.
Also I ordered them 5/01/08 and they cost $129.99. This isn't a deal, its just an advertisement.

I think newegg is selling referb hard drives and that's why all the failures.

Got a product you want to find for a steal, but not enough time to run through fatbacon, baconeals, BensBargains, or any other of the deep-discount sites? Deal aggregator Combyo gives you results on any product, filtered by date, source, or category, and lets you set email price alerts for anything that's just not cheap enough yet. It's fairly similar in purpose to previously-mentioned Dealighted, but the interface is a lot cleaner and easier to run through (Original Dealighted post). http://www.combyo.com/

bought one and the firmware was fine. i'm still trying to figure out if i can get it running in sata2. for now, continuous transfer is hovering around 60mbps

At 17.3 cents per gigabyte, it's an OK deal but nothing to get excited over. And certainly it's not a deal and IS something to get excited over if you end up with a bug or a virus. For those of you who haven't heard about Seagate's recent troubles in that department, here are links to check out. At least it sounds like they took the problem seriously.

I agree with #5. Few years ago I bought 2 Seagate drives from Newegg and they failed after a few months. Replaced them under warranty and never bought anything from NE again.

NE is great place to buy, but not sure it's the best place for OEM non retail packed hard drives. I bought over 2yrs ago a twin pack of OEM SATA Hitachi's both DOA. The packing was very poor, the edges of the hard drives were exposed out of the bubble wrap, so it was easily banged on the sides, that is probably how they died during transport. NE was great with return and RAMd both drives, however I have sent the bad ones back in nice HDD packing and requested the new replacements put in my packing to send them to me. Never the less, when new drives arrived they were packed as poorly as those original ones. Luckily this time they survived the transport and are still working today. So I would only buy retail packed HDDs from NE. If you check NE reviews for this drive you find out that in 2yrs nothing changed and they still pack those HDDs badly.
