Sounds good but does not seem to have a decent input. Wouldn't this be much better if it had hdmi or component input instead of just composite(rca) video?

No DVD recorders have HDMI in. There are or were a couple that had component in, not many.

DVD full res is 720x480. Good DVD recorders have at least S-video input (the component a very few have is 480i), about 500x480. Composite is substantially worse, so if it's upconverted (for viewing, not recording), it will still look blurry at large screen size.
