Recording HD video onto $90-, 8GB-max-, memory sticks sounds like a bad idea....

How does this one compare to the Sony HDR-CX7?

I like the looking... but Sony customer service is very bad. I had a problem with my Sony Laptop and send it to SONY. "IT TOOK 2 MONTH TO GET IT BACK." Sad

Old school tape is still the way to fly. Less compression and cheaper/easier storage. The only draw back is slower transfer rates to your PC for editing.

1080p? a video must take up a ton of space.

I have the HDR CX7 and its awesome...memory sticks are a lot cheaper nowadays and the prices are going down all the time. Quite common to see 8 GB for $60. Not sure what the exact* resolution is on this cam. Sony are misleading...they have a "TRUE" HD at 1920x1080p and lower rez models I think they call "FULL" HD...(The CX7 is "FULL")...anyway the best feature of this is obviously the convenience and portability- thats why you are paying the premium price.
